Sam Cooke – Change Gonna Come
This is probably my favourite song of all time. The sentiment of this song, the depth behind the lyrics, the melody and the spirit behind the voice is overwhelming. The climate and state of society at the time and the oppression his people endured; a look at the context around the timing of this song just makes it one of the greatest songs to ever be written in my opinion.

Kanye West – No Church In The Wild
Kanye is a genius. He’s the king of those moving MPC drums, the sampling – I read somewhere the base line was a pitched sped up guitar lick (I could be wrong). The beat sets the tone out the gate, then that Frank Ocean melody and those lyrics….. “What’s a mob to a king, what’s a king to a god, what’s a god to a non-believer….. ”. And the video, mind blowing the perfection of nuance in this moment is wild.

Gessaflestien – Hate or Glory
This song and visual blew my mind when I first saw it. The power and feeling I experienced first with the music and visual combined really opened my mind as to possibility. It changed my perspective on standards of work and an understanding into the different pedigrees of expression.

Skepta – Lukey World
Skepta is different. This song resonates for a lot of personal reasons. You are at your most powerful as an artist when you stop seeking validation and stop needing approval. When you are in your truth and know yourself.

Frank Ocean – Thinking about you / Brent Faiyaz
I had to give 2… They are creative relatives. Both opened my mind melodically and arrangement wise. Melody, vocals, the conversational lyrics, dark overloaded emotional narrativesbalanced the beautiful R&B pentatonic melodies.
