Effervescent emerging pop artist Jacqui Lumsden has today released her sparkling new single Closer, a poignant yet upbeat track inspired by the pain and yearning involved in a long distance relationship. The clever, catchy single follows Jacqui’s previous release System Overload, a charming, urgent pop song about dreaming of rebelling against capitalism. The song-writing on display on Jacqui’s recent work  demonstrates a strong, versatile ability to craft songs that speak directly to the heart of the listener.

Closer embraces both retro, dreamy ‘80s synths and modern, textured production – the groove simmers underneath Jacqui’s smooth, assertive vocal. Closer features some of Jacqui’s best vocal melodies yet – the chorus hook is irresistible and fresh, and is guaranteed to stick in the listener’s mind long after the song is finished. Evocative of MARINACarly Rae Jepsen and the dynamic Hayley WilliamsCloser shines with Jacqui’s unique character, as her lyrics juxtapose and question (“Pain finds places to hide/you’ll be fine ‘til you find it,”) asking her audience to allow themselves to be vulnerable right there with her.

Produced with Brad Jackson of Supersonic Recordings, Closer is guaranteed to pull at your heartstrings. Speaking on the inspiration for the track, Jacqui says, “The song is about separation. At 16, I fell desperately in love with someone on the other side of the world. He was my best friend and the only person I felt understood me truly. We spent a year together and then I went back to my small country town in Victoria, and that was that. It felt like the world was crashing down around me. Ultimately this song is about long distance relationships and the trauma of being separated from the person you love.”

Jacqui Lumsden is an accomplished songwriter and artist, with her song System Overload taking her to the semifinals of Listen Up Music’s 2022 Songwriting Prize. In 2021, she was awarded the Fuse Darebin Songwriter’s Award for her single Don’t Go Loving The Same. It seems like the world is finally catching up to Jacqui’s talents, as she develops her craft even further with each new release – Jacqui Lumsden is only just getting started.
